Information for Trip Volunteers
Travel with a purpose!
GNE travels to places where we have developed partnerships with local community leaders to improve health through nutrition. We also enjoy sharing the opportunity to travel with volunteers who accompany us on these trips. There is a certain satisfaction to be gained from traveling with a purpose.
By the nature of our endeavors to reach vulnerable populations at risk for undernutrition, we travel to hard to reach places. Of late. it seems that we have been visiting areas plagued by earthquakes, typhoons and active volcanoes!
While volunteering to join GNE on a trip can be very rewarding, it can also be strenuous, challenging, tiresome and hazardous. We ask that volunteers be in good health and fit condition, able to walk 5 miles/day in hot climates and hilly terrain.
Typically a trip will have 2-3 experienced GNE leaders and a few volunteers. Generally volunteers will be attending meetings, participating in teaching sessions and/or helping to distribute micronutrient supplements. GNE trips are sometimes co-ordinated with other NGOs doing medical clinics.
Volunteers are expected to pay GNE for their expenses and in-country travel costs. Options for travel to and from the country will be discussed as a group. You are responsible for having a valid passport with at least 6 months before expiration. We encourage you to consult with a travel medicine service 1-2 months prior to departure.
We select volunteers from the pool of applicants based on background, interest and compatibility.
If you would like to volunteer for a trip with the GNE, please contact us and send us a completed volunteer application form (available below). At this time you will need to print the form, fill it out and scan/e-mail in return or send it by post.
